Sophie makes ceramic, resin and bronze sculpture. Her pieces translate visions and thoughts into solid forms, expressing something about life beyond the purely visible. She works on collections of pieces exploring themes. Amongst her subjects are the nude, animals and dance. Sophie also designs for garden ornament companies and has made Buddhas and birdbaths, owls and obelisks. Born in West Dorset in 1957, she grew up in Yorkshire and trained at Winchester Art School before moving to London. She returned to live in the West Country in 1987.
Whilst plans happen anywhere, usually a sculpture is made in the studio. Sculptures are conceived and evolve from many sources including clients ideas.
For Sophie's purely personal practice, most often these days, clay is included somewhere in the process. Standing back to look, leaving things to settle, experimentation, building and destruction are all parts of the making.
