Cornwall has long been described as 'almost an island'. The Elizabethan writer and antiquary Richard Carew described it eloquently that Cornwall was 'so besieged by the ocean it forms a demi island within an island'.
Ian Rawnsley used this premise as a starting point to produce a body of work that centred on the use of found materials both flora and mineral in origin to produce a colour chart of pigments which will be raffled off in aid of the Merlin - Cornwall's Neuro Therapy Centre.
To compliment this colour chart; Ian has produced approximately forty plus additional pieces in a variety of media for the show this coming September. The work will reflect the diversity of environments of the county from the white sands of its dazzling coasts, sweeping moorland to a number of botanical themed works based on the sourced flora used in the original natural pigments.
The exhibition will be open daily from 10:30am until 4:30pm, from Thursday 17th to Sunday 27th September 2026.
Join us for bubbles and meet the Artist, Ian Rawnsley, between 2-6pm on Thursday 17th September.

Karen Birchwood, painter, and Kate Schuricht, ceramicist, met whilst exhibiting as members of the Rye Society of Artists. Here, they discovered their mutual love of seascapes and rural landscapes and a deep appreciation for each other’s work. Capturing these landscape scenes on both canvas and in clay, both artists respond to a strong sense of place and the idea of a moment caught in time.
