Sarah Ross-Thompson

As a Fine Art Printmaker, Sarah specialises in hand-inked, original collagraph prints inspired by the British countryside. Using carefully constructed collage blocks her work combines the vibrant colours of oil-based printing inks with the textural qualities of the collage materials used in her blocks.

Sarah spent her childhood in a surprisingly unflat part of Norfolk aptly named Upper Stoke Holy Cross, just outside Norwich. Surrounded by fields and woodland, her love of the landscape was founded early on and she developed her technique of taking mental snapshots while out walking. These snapshots or ‘memories of journeys’ are recorded on her return to be worked up into paintings and prints at a later date.

Her passion for art began when an inspirational art teacher at Norwich High School took an interest in her work and encouraged her to explore printmaking during her A Level studies. Following a degree in English and Classics in London, Sarah returned to her first love, art, studying at Bournemouth College of Art and Design. Specialising in Printmaking allowed her to explore a variety of techniques including lino, etching and collagraphy.
Sarah now works predominantly through collagraphy, a printmaking technique requiring the construction of a collage block using applied materials such as corrugated card, fabric, tissue and salt. Once the block has been sealed with varnish it can be inked up and taken through an etching press to produce highly textural prints. The nature of this process limits the reproduction to small hand-inked print runs of around 20 – 30 before the blocks begin to lose their integrity.

Her work was selected for the National Print Exhibition in 1997 at the Mall Galleries and this was followed by a solo show in London later that year. Over the past few years she has exhibited widely including shows at Salisbury Playhouse, Sherborne House, Mariners Gallery, St. Ives, Wonderwall Gallery, Cirencester, Fisherton Mill, Salisbury and Wills Art Warehouse, London. Her work has been on display at the ‘Art on Paper’ fair at the Royal College of Art, and the Affordable Art Fairs in Battersea, Bristol and Amsterdam.
